On Wednesday, October 22, at 2 p.m. E.T., Inside Higher Ed will present a free webcast featuring expert panelists to discuss the survey findings and provide firsthand insights on what it means to lead in academic affairs in 2025; when the work is increasingly shaped by resource constraints, political pressures and the urgent needs of students and faculty.

The 2025 Survey of College and University Chief Academic Officers was made possible by support from Coursedog, Honorlock and Watermark.

In this year’s survey, provosts share perspectives on:

  • How effective their institution is in delivering on core academic missions and preparing students for the workforce
  • Whether pursuing administrative leadership has been worthwhile and if they’ve had the resources needed to carry out initiatives
  • Federal funding trends and challenges under the second Trump administration, including the impact on federal student aid programs, international enrollment and academic freedom
  • The state of civil discourse on their campuses, including effectiveness in promoting critical thinking, free expression, free inquiry and consensus building
  • What they view as the top threats to campus safety
  • The extent to which artificial intelligence is reshaping their institution's priorities
