A recent NASA study found that the heat trapped by Earth's land, ocean, and atmosphere has doubled since 2005. What is causing this? Global warming from our greenhouse gas emissions. Where is it all coming from? Well, 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions are coming from the energy sector.
So, we need the energy sector to transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy to give us any chance at mitigating climate catastrophe. However, this transition has been slow, with renewable energy sharing only a 22% global power mix in 2020. When we dug around to find out why the transition has been slow, we quickly realised the answer is not straightforward at all.
When an answer is complicated to an important sustainability question, our instinct is to create a course. So, we did just that. Our community SDGPlus created a 10-part explainer style animated course on:
Energy Sector
Economics of Renewable Energy
Transition to Renewable Energy
Global Policies' Effect on Renewable Energy
Solar Energy
Hydropower
Wind Turbine Energy
Biomass Energy
Renewable Energy Mix
Future of Renewable Energy
These series will explore the following themes:
How the energy sector works.
The economics behind fossil fuels and renewable energy.
The role of policy in bringing sustainable energy to the forefront.
How renewable technology has evolved over the years.
What needs to improve for us to transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy?
