The goal of this course is to train participants on the overview of the criminal justice system, including recent reforms.Although it is aimed at violence peer counselors, this course is suitable for anyone who providespeer support services and/or works with young adults. The information covered in this course include:

• Juvenile Justice System in California
• Diversion and Recidivism
• Recent Criminal Justice Reforms in California
• Diversion from Incarceration

Through this course of 5lectures, over 35minutes of video content, informational handouts and 1quiz,participants will have a betterunderstanding of the criminal justice system and recent reforms in legislature, be able to define diversion and recidivism and understandhow reducing recidivism is a component of peer counseling with survivors of violence, and have an introduction to the Juvenile Justice System through a case study focusing on opportunities for diversion.

As peer counselorsor anyone who provides peer support services,it isimportant to have an understanding of the Criminal & Juvenile Justice Systems.Understanding the system will enablebetter service tothecommunity and clients.Thus this course will greatly benefit thosein this field of work.
